Read "The Grey Woman And Other Tales" by Mrs. (Elizabeth) Gaskell available from Rakuten : Gutenberg. Lacock was used as a film location for scenes in Pride & Prejudice (), Cranford (), Emma (), and recently, a market scene in Downton Abbey (season 6). Even though I am using Lacock as a basic model for Ivy Hill, I’ve placed the village farther south, on the old Devonport-London Royal Mail route, not far from Salisbury and the real.

Cranford I am sorry to say that I did not enjoy this book as much as I have other books by this author. There are some funny statements threaded through the book but I had difficulty holding onto the plot, if there was one. 3 people found this helpful.   Indeed, the BBC mini-series versions of "Cranford" included stories from several of Gaskell's other novels. However, the stories here all add up to a devastatingly accurate picture of small town life and the sometimes vicious yet /5().

It seems to have taken me almost as long to get around to writing this review as it took me to actually read the book. 'Cranford: and other stories' is really, as the title would suggest, more a collection of short to longer stories revolving more or less around the small town of Cranford and its slightly curious inhabitants/5.

First of all, the Goodreads' title of this book is wrong - there is no story called "Return to Cranford", it is actually "Return to Cranford - Cranford and other stories". The stories are "Cranford", "The cage at Cranford" (a short story) and "The Moorland cottage" (a novelette, I believe is the right term)/5.

But it certainly was in keeping with the spirit of Gaskell.
