The title is a reference to Virginia Woolf (The Common Reader, the First and Second Series), who borrowed it from Samuel Johnson’s Life of Gray, who wrote of “all those rooms, too humble to be called libraries, yet full of books, where the pursuit of reading is carried on by private people/5(K).
